Op/Ed – New Meaning to Religious Symbols in Jazzy B’s Debut Movie

The Punjabi movie Best of Luck featuring Jazzy Bains is set to release later this month.  The movie is being much talked about by Punjabis worldwide since it features the debut of Jazzy Bains.  While Bains is one of the most appreciated singers of Punjabi music, he also enjoys a large fan base of Sikhs because of his religious songs.  His recent song Bhagi has brought him much fame at the same time because of its sympathy with the Sikh freedom movement.

The movie seems a mix of action and comedy and to add to the debut by Jazzy B, it features other actors such as Gippy Grewal, Simran Mundi (Miss India Universe 2008) and Binnu Dhillon.  With such celebrated cast and much advertising, the movie is definitely set to top the charts.

With the mention of Jazzy B’s Sikhi and Khalistan oriented songs, and this editorial on Sikh24, one may think that the movie may be religious in nature.  While not exactly a Sadda Haq, Best of Luck has some religious elements to it.  The following trailer introduces Jazzy B wearing a “gold karra”, a khanda pendent and a tattoo.  Although not much is known about the story line at this point, it seems like Jazzy B plays the role of a gangster (or ਗੁੰਡਾ).

Do the Karra, Khanda pendent or tattoo represent the character of a gangster?  These symbols of the Sikh faith have been attributed to the soldier aspect of the Sant-Sipahi concept however now they are being misused as a fashion statement.  One may think that after singing many Sikhi oriented songs, Jazzy B would understand the sentiments of his community, but like others, he too seems less concerned about Sikh religious values.

Jazzy B is set to make an appearance at the upcoming Azaadi Mela in Slough, UK on July 21.  This mela is a joint venture by Panthik organizations including SOPW Sikh Prisoner Welfare Organization, Sikh Channel UK and Khalsa School Slough.  Along with Jazzy B, other guests include Kuljinder Sidhu and Dinesh Sood of Sadda Haq.  The main purpose of the mela is said to honor “Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shaheed Udhum Singh, Jathedaar Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara, Prof Davinderpal Singh Bhullar, Bhai Balwant Singh and other Sikh soorme.”

While at the event, Jazzy B will be singing to fundraise for Sikh Jujharoos or freedom fighters, recently he appeared next to the notorious Hard “Kaur” who just sparked a new controversy when she used derogatory terms for the 10th Sikh Guru and abused so-called Sikh attendees of her concert in Chandigarh.

After these facts, it becomes interesting to note if any Sikh organizations will take a stand against Jazzy B for misusing Sikh religious symbols.  It was not too long ago when Sikhs objected to the misuse of Sikh symbols in movies such as Singh is King and Son of Sardar.  Will the same organizations stand up and rise to the challenge and put a stop to the misuse of Sikh emblems?
