Certification Required to Alter Pre-1947 architecture in Punjab

Ruins of Five-and-a-half century old house of Bebe Nanaki, which is now replaced by a modern looking building.

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Punjab Government has made it mandatory to acquire a no objection certificate before the demolishing of buildings made before the year 1947.  This step has been undertaken to preserve the rich cultural  heritage of Punjab

The officials of the Cultural Department, Historic Department and Museum Department have been regulated to take the necessary steps. The demolition of any historical building without permission would result in serious legal action.

Sikh organisations concerned over demolition of Sikh historical buildings, including Gurdwaras, have called for a similar statue to be passed to save Sikh history from being destroyed.  Where the SGPC, along with Punjab Government in past have constructed memorials portraying history of Punjab and Sikhs, they have done nothing to save actual historical buildings and artifacts which are deteriorating day by day.
