1984 Sikh Genocide Victims Demand a Debate in Indian Parliament

NEW DELHI—Objecting to the stay granted in Sajjan Kumar’s trial and to Jagdish Tytler and KP Gill’s nominations to represent India in the London 2012 Olympics, hundreds of widows, victims and survivors of the 1984 Sikh Genocide gathered before the Parliament of India and submitted a memorandum to Manmohan Singh, the Prime Minister.

The memorandum urges an end to the practice of impunity towards the Congress leaders who organized the genocide against Sikhs and demands that the Parliament of India should hold an open debate regarding ongoing and continuous denial of justice to the 1984 Genocide victims.

The “Government of India has been practicing impunity towards the perpetrators of 1984 Sikh Genocide. The Congress leaders—including Sajjan Kumar, Kamal Nath and Tytler—who organized and perpetrated the Genocide of Sikhs are being protected by the Government while on the other hand, Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh were tried, convicted and hanged within [a] few years of 1984,” states the July 17th memorandum to PM Singh.

According to Karnail Singh Peermohammad, President of All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF), “Injustice anywhere is [a] threat to justice everywhere” and the denial of justice to victims of the Sikh Genocide will lead to unrest. The nomination of Tytler and KP Gill to represent India during the 2012 London Olympics clearly shows the practice of impunity, added Peermohammad.

According to Bibi Jagdish Kaur, a prime witness against Sajjan Kumar, the “stay of Sajjan’s trial sends a clear message to the victims that killers of Sikhs will always be protected and victims of 1984 Genocide will never get justice in India.”

Babu Singh Dukhiya, while advocating to hold an open debate on the issue of the practice of impunity towards the perpetrators of the 1984 Sikh Genocide stated that the Parliament of India is duty bound to act when injustice is being done to victims.

The July 17th Justice Rally was organized by AISSF, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) and “National 1984 Victims Justice and Welfare Society”—a group consisting of widows, victims and survivors of the 1984 Sikh Genocide working to achieve justice.

Re: Denial Of Justice To The Victims Of 1984 Sikh Genocide Will Lead To Unrest

Date: July 17, 2012.

National 1984 Victims Justice and Welfare Society is a group consisting of widows, victims and survivors of November 1984 Sikh Genocide working to achieve justice.

All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF) is a registered organization committed to work for the betterment of Sikh community, promoting the values of Sikhism and to raise voice on the issues concerning the Sikh community.

Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) is a human rights organization, striving to disseminate true and correct information, statistics, figures and data regarding the Genocide of Sikhs (1984-1998).

We are writing to raise the objection over the Government’s decision to pick Tytler and KPS Gill to represent India in London 2012 Olympics and grant of stay to Sajjan’s trail. Tytler, Sajjan and Gill are responsible for orchestrating genocidal attacks and extra judicial killings of Sikhs during 1984-98 in which thousands were killed.

Government of India has been practicing impunity towards the killer of Sikhs. The congress leaders including Sajjan Kumar, Kamal Nath and Tytler who organized and perpetrated the Genocide of Sikhs are being protected by the Government while on the other hand, Bhai Satwant Singh and Bhai Kehar Singh were tried, convicted and hanged within few years of 1984. The stay of Sajjan Kumar’s trial, refusal to prosecute Tytler and KPS Gill and instead nominating them for representing India during 2012 London Olympics, clearly shows the practice of impunity. These actions send a clear message that killers of Sikhs will always be protected and victims of 1984 Genocide will never get justice in India.

“Injustice anywhere is threat to justice everywhere”. The continuous denial of justice to victims of Sikh Genocide will lead to unrest in India. The Parliament of India is duty bound to act when such grave injustice is being done. We urge the Parliament to:

  •  Hold an Open Debate on the issue of practice of Impunity towards perpetrators of 1984 Sikh Genocide and continuous denial of justice.
  • Prohibit Tytler and KPS Gill from representing India in London 2012 Olympics.
