O Farid! Allah’s ripened dates are there and rivers of the honey flow. -Sheikh Farid, Guru Granth Sahib, 1382

Message: God’s ripened dates and flowing rivers of honey!
Human beings are never satisfied. Their demands and desires are incessant. The ones which are not fulfilled in this life are expected to be fulfilled afterlife.  Hence, Baba Farid makes a reference to Islamic belief system where dates and honey represent heavenly reward or food, hereafter.

The message is that life is ebbing away by running after worldly cravings and temptations. Make haste and avoid further delay in attaching yourselves to the Divine. In this way, you can reap the benefits of eternal happiness, which would be like God’s ripened dates and flowing rivers of honey, in this life itself.

Note: Farid lived most of his life in Multan (now in Pakistan), a hot region. The sight of trees full of sweet dates in the summer months might have been an easy example for him to quote, besides the reference to Islamic belief system.

Etymology: From Sanskrit kharjoor (date or date-palm tree or its fruit) → Pali khajjooree → Prakrit khajjoor/khajjooree → Sindhi/Oriya khajoori, Lahndi, Punjabi and others khajoor.
