AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—In the wake of rising crimes in Bengaluru (Karnataka), the Bengaluru police have imposed ban on carrying sharp edged religious symbols like swords, machetes, Kirpan (religious symbol of the Sikhs) and kukris (traditional Nepali Gurkha knives). It is learnt that the move has came after the gruesome murder of RSS worker Rudresh in Shivajinagar.
Justifying the ban on Kirpan in concern of Sikhs, the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Subash Chandra has said that there was no need for an exemption as Sikhs are protected under other state laws.
Meanwhile, the SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar has strongly condemned the move. He has termed it as an unconstitutional move as it violates the section 25 of Indian Constitution.
In a press note shared with Sikh24, Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar has said that the religious freedom of Sikhs was being suppressed in Karnataka under garb of this notification. He added that the ‘Kirpan’ (an article of Sikh faith) was an inseparable part Sikh costume.
Appealing the Union government of India and the Punjab government to intervene in the matter, Prof. Badungar has said that the ban on carrying Kirpan in Karnataka should be withdrawn immediately. He has also asked the duo governments to take suitable measures to control such unconstitutional activities in future.

This ban has been clarified as rescinded, for the kirpan.

Why haven’t you issue an update to this article? The matter has already been resolved with the govt issuing a clarification that the Kirpan for Sikhs was never covered under the ban.

The definition of democracy is different in India, it’s not by the people, of the people & for the people, it’s buy the people, of the rulers ( the elected people think they became kings & don’t care about people), & it’s for the benefits of rulers not for the people.
