1984 Sikh Genocide: Supreme Court asks Union government to constitute Supervisory committee

NEW DELHIā€”The Supreme Court of India on March 6 directed the Union government of India to consider the constitution of Supervisory committee to look after the day to day working of Special Investigation Team (SIT). Notably, the Special Investigation Team was appointed in February 2015 to re-investigate cases of 1984 Sikh genocide.

The Supervisory committee will look after the day to day working of Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the ongoing trials of cases in the Court that have been reopened by the SIT. The Supreme Court has directed the Union government of India in reaction to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) moved by the DSGMC member Gurlad Singh Kahlon.

The Supreme Court has further directed the petitioner S. Gurlad Singh Kahlon to file his suggestions in connection with the 1984 Sikh genocide cases. The apex court bench headed by Justice Dipak Misra asked petitioner Kahlon to file suggestions and also sought a report from the Special Investigation Team (SIT) regarding the progress in the case. The next date of hearing has been deferred to March 24 by the Court.

It is pertinent to note here that the petition moved by S. Gurlad Singh Kahlon had triggered the SIT to speed up processing of 1984 Sikh genocide cases in the Court.
