BJP Fields Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina for Lok Sabha by-poll in Amritsar

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—The ruling Bhartiya Janta Party has nominated its former state vice President Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina for the by-poll of Amritsar. It is being speculated that the BJP chose to bet on a Sikh face as the trend pattern has been that Sikh candidates have always won in the last four parliamentary elections.

Sikh24 has also learnt that the proximity of Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina, who is the honorary secretary of Khalsa College Governing Council, with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and Punjab’s Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia, proved pivotal in having the BJP finalize his candidacy.

The ballot battle in the Amritsar by-poll is going to be tough as the Congress has also finalized the name of its District Congress Committee, president Gurjit Singh Aujla, who is also a Sikh. The Amritsar parliamentary seat has 64% Sikh vote.

It may be recalled here that Punjab Congress head Captain Amarinder Singh had resigned from Amritsar parliamentary seat in protest of Supreme Court’s ruling against Punjab on SYL-Canal issue. The Election Commission had announced to hold the by-poll for Parliamentary seat on the same day as of assembly polls i.e. February 4.
