Scuffle at UK Amateur Boxing Match

COVENTRY, UK—A sports gym in Coventry, UK, hosted an amateur boxing match which embarrassingly turned sour when a scuffle ensued, involving the boxers, trainers and on-lookers. Khalsa Akhara Boxing Club hosted an event called “Boxing Interclub” at the Sikh Family Centre Gym, which is where the incident took place.

Women and children among the audience looked on in shock as the boxing match flew out of control and a free-for-all suddenly broke out after one of the boxers got angry at his opponents seemingly unfair grabbing, which the referee appeared not to notice. One of the boxers then threw off his gloves and lunged in, resulting in numerous on-lookers jumping into the ring.

The whole affair has been reported on numerous news sites in the UK, including the video of the brawl for all to see.

Many commentators have questioned the complete lack of professionalism of the organizers and some Sikhs have expressed heavy disappointment due to the resulting negative press reflecting on Sikhs on the whole.

One Gym spokesman said, “A question that arises is that of organizations and groups using sacred Sikh names such as ‘Khalsa’ and ‘Singh’, when the users of these names don’t uphold the values that the names suggest. This risks these highly respected names quite often being brought into disrepute, such as the in the recent event in Coventry.

“There has often been footballing groups who have been observed swearing and behaving in ways which drag these great historic and heroic names through the dirt. This type of blatant disregard needs to brought to the attention of those who run these organizations and groups”.

A Facebook comment by the organizers of the event played down the startling turn of events with the following statement “All clubs and boxers conducted themselves well and put on a great show for all the fans, the main event unfortunately didn’t live up to expectations and like with any event there was a bit of drama with it, having said that videos released look worse than what it actually was, all said and done all has finished with smiles and love…”
