CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara has once again crticized the Burail Jail authorities for now allowing him to meet with his relatives.  Bhai Tara is being held at the Burail Jail in relation to the Beant Singh assassination case.

Bhai Tara was arrested in Thailand on January 5, 2015 after a tip-off received by the Punjab Police. Bhai Tara had travelled to Thailand through Pakistan and lived there for several years.

In an affadavit filed with the court through his legal counsel, Bhai Tara stated that while others facing trial in the Beant Singh assassination case are allowed to meet with their relatives, the jail authorities are discriminating against him.

As of right now, witness testimonies are again being recorded for the case, which is at a critical point.  The next hearing in this case will be held on May 25, in which the CBI will record testimonies of jail staff.

In an affidavit filed with the court, Bhai Tara said that several of his close relatives were killed in illegal murders in the 90s by Punjab police.  Seeking permission to meet with his brother’s brother-in-law, Bhai Tara said that he is one of the closest relatives he has that is alive today.  He asked the court to grant permission to meet him.

Burail Jail authorities stated that Bhai Tara had permission to meet with some relatives earlier, however, this permission was revoked after the Chandigarh administration filed a petition with the Punjab and Haryana High Court asking him to be kept in solitary confinement.  This petition is still pending in the court.

Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara had gone on hunger strike last month for over one week just to get permission to visit the Burail Jail Gurdwara Sahib.
