Despite Stiff Opposition, SGPC Okays Chief Secretary’s Post

SGPC meetingSRI FATEHGARH SAHIB, Punjab—Despite facing stiff opposition from Sikhs across the world, the executive committee of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), on Tuesday approved creation of the post of Chief Secretary who will be paid Rs 3,00,000 per month. The SGPC also ignored legal notices served on it by former SGPC member Sawinder Singh Dobalia against the controversial move of the supreme Sikh body.

The SGPC gave the green signal to the move on the recommendations of a sub-committee which was set up when announcement was made in this regard.

The SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar said the committee would properly advertise the post and invite applications within the next 10 days. He said that transparency would be maintained while filling the vacancy of higher rank.

“The committee has also decided to appeal the union government to hold government functions throughout the country to observe the martyrdom day of Guru Teg Bahadur as he had sacrificed his life to save Hindus”, he said, adding that the committee would soon write to the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister and the state Chief Minister in this regard.

Moreover, the committee took the decisions given below:

  • Inn containing facility of 200 rooms will be constructed at Sri Fatehgarh Sahib.
  • Rs 5 lac will be paid as school fees of as many as 60 children belonging to financially weak Sikligar Sikh community of Vijaywara.
  • Organic farming will be materialized on 5 acres land owned by historical Sikh shrines each.
  • Meritorious students studying in SGPC’s schools will be honoured.
  • All societies and organizations which cooperated the SGPC in celebrations of 350th foundation of Sri Anandpur Sahib, will be honoured by organizing a special function.

Raghujit Singh Virk, Kewal Badal, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur, Nirmal Singh Jaula Kla, Dyal Singh Kolianwal, Karnail Singh Panjoli and Rajinder Singh Mehta were among those who attended the meeting.
