Legal Notice Served on SGPC over appointment of Chief Secretary

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has received a legal notice over chief secretary appointment.  The legal notice has een served by the former SGPC member Sawinder Singh Dobalian and Shiromani Akali Dal (1920) leader Rajinder Singh Badheri.

As per information available with sikh24, the notice has been issued on the name of SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar, secretary Roop Singh and executive committee members. The SGPC has been warned in the notice that if it implemented its decision of creating the post of chief secretary, they would move the Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission chairman and the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The notice was issued through advocate Talwinder Singh, under the Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925.

It is notable that meeting of executive panel of the SGPC is being held at Fatehgarh Sahib on June 30 to discuss the controversial move. As per the decision, there will be three secretaries working under the chief secretary, who will be paid Rs 3 lakh monthly. The notice pointed out that one could not appoint a person of over 58 years of age. Similarly, the salary of the highest post of secretary at present was fixed at Rs 73,000 per month.

The SGPC has cancelled the interview schedule for the post two times. Now, the interview date will be finalised after getting an approval from the executive body in next meeting. As per sources, the age bar of 58 for candidates too was being overlooked for the post.

As per reliable sources, Harcharan Singh, retired general manager of Punjab and Sindh Bank, is reportedly being appointed on this post.


  1. Is it required to pay such a high salary to someone just to do seva of guru ghar. I think this is just an other way to disburse guru ki golak contributed by the devotional sangat.the first right on this must be of poors(garib) to whom we have forgotten even it is not possible for a needy and poor to get the job of a sevadar untill unless he has a approach of a Jathedar/minister in SGPC/Govt.
    If we have extra funds we must use this to establish Khalsa shool free for the poorer landless labourers in villages and cities who could not pay the haffty fees of modernday education with this the true seva of sikhism will be done and sikhi will flurish.Kindly excuse me if I am wrong.
