Sikh Relief Continue Humanitarian Efforts in Kashmir as Volunteers Fall Ill

2014-09-20- sikh reliefA large team of Sikh Relief (SOPW) volunteers are into the second week of relief work helping the victims of the Jammu & Kashmir floods. Under extremely difficult circumstances, they have spent their days wading through deep water containing debris and sharp objects, as well as it being contaminated with sewage and toxic waste. Constant contact with the polluted water has resulted in the team suffering from skin damage to their hands and feet. The authorities are yet to pump out the standing water. To make matters worse, our team have come across reptiles and dead animals, and more recently, they are also recovered the dead bodies of those people who drowned in the flood waters.

As well as the mental and emotional drain on our volunteers, three members of the team have been taken ill and admitted to hospital. In the photo is our team member, Maninder Singh, who was injured whilst carrying out seva.

Please join us in praying for the safety of all our volunteers who are undertaking important humanitarian aid.
