179th Death Anniversary: Sikh Flag Hoisted in Peshawar’s Bala Hisar Fort after 170 Years

PESHAWAR, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan—The 179th death anniversary of Sher-e-Punjab Maharaja Ranjit Singh was observed by the Sikh masses at the Bala Hisar fort of Peshawar on June 27. The Sikh Flag was hoisted in this historic fort Bala Hisar after 170 years of the Sikh Empire which ended in 1848.

Bala Hisar is a historic fortress located in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The fort was used as a royal residence for the Durrani Empire, and was renovated during Sikh rule. The fort now serves as headquarters for Pakistan’s Frontier Corps.

Sharing the development with media, S. Charanjit Singh informed that a religious program was held inside the fort Bala Hisar from 6 pm to 8 pm. He further informed that the Raagi Jathas of Bhai Talwinder Singh, Bhai Gurwinder Singh and Bhai Joginder Singh delighted the attendees with melodious Kirtan beside students of Bhai Joga Singh Religious School. “The present Sikh attendees were apprised of Sikh history by Bhai Amarjit Singh” he added.

He further informed that the death anniversary of Sher-e-Punjab has been marked two days prior to the exact date (June 29) so that the Sikh devotees could reach to Lahore on June 29.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the portraits of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa will be installed in historic forts related to Sikh empire like the forts of Bala Hisar, Jamraud, Shabqadar and Baada.
