Sikhs have been in the U.S. for over 120 years and there are over 700,000+ Sikhs across the country. However, Sikh religious classes and narratives are rarely taught in schools and universities and getting rid of one of the few Sikh classes taught in California Universities wouldn’t allow students a chance to get to know who the Sikhs really are as they are often misunderstood and mistaken for other races. This Sikh religious at UCLA is in high demand from its students and will help students learn the importance of the Sikh religion and its people.
Since 9/11 Sikhs have been mistaken for Muslims due to the wearing of the turban and beard. A number of Sikhs across the country have also been attacked in hate crimes. Creating a Sikh studies class at such a opulent university will help more people who the Sikhs really are.
This is also an exciting opportunity for UCLA students to learn more about the Sikh faith, history, nuances, and overall cultural.
