Attack on Nankana Sahib: Three Sentenced by Pakistan Court

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—On January 12, an anti-terrorism court of Pakistan addressed punishment to three persons for launching an attack on sacred Sikh shrine Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sri Nankana Sahib. The Court sentenced main conspirator Imran Chishti for two years and two others namely Mohammad Sultan and Mohammad Ahmad for 6 months.

However, the Court acquitted four others in the absence of sufficient evidences proving their guilt. All the accused of this incident were facing charges under sections 295A, 290, 291, 341,506, 148 and 149 of Pakistan Penal Code and 7-ATA (anti-terrorism act).

On January 3 last year, a mob of Muslims had launched an attack on Gurdwara Janam Asthan in Sri Nankana Sahib after being incited by Imran Ali Chishti. All these Muslim assailants were misled by Imran Ali Chishti at a local Mosque when they had gathered there to offer Jummah prayers. 

Imran Ali Chishti, a government employee working in the Fisheries Department, had grudge towards Sikhs as his family was facing legal action as his younger brother Mohammad Hassan had married a teenage Sikh girl Jagjit Kaur after allegedly abducting  and forcibly converting her to Islam. After conversion, she was given a new name Ayesha. 

During the attack, all these assailants had pelted stones on the sacred Sikh shrine Gurdwara Janam Asthan Sri Nankana Sahib.

On January 4 last year, Imran Ali Chishti had tendered an apology for his mischievous act of inciting mob to attack Gurdwara Sri Nankana Sahib.

It is pertinent to note here that the Sikh girl Jagjit Kaur, who is a daughter of Granthi Singh serving in Nankana Sahib, has been living in Darul Aman (government shelter house) in Lahore. She is continuously denying to convert back and return to her house.
