LUDHIANA: Gurdwara Committee terminates Granthi Singh citing insufficiency of resources

LUDHIANA, Punjab—The management committee of Gurdwara Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, situated in Paasi Nagar of Ludhiana, today terminated the services of Granthi Nishan Singh citing insufficiency of funds due to prevailing lockdown. Interestingly, the management of Gurdwara Sahib has expressed inability to afford negligible salary of a Granthi only after three weeks of lockdown.

Granthi Nishan Singh, who was also performing the seva of Kirtan in Gurdwara Sahib, said that the Gurdwara management committee asked him to serve either free of cost or get relieved from services. “When I asked them about my day to day expenditures, they asked me to sell my bike and family’s plot,” he alleged.

“They called a meeting to expel me despite lockdown and ‘gifted’ me a termination letter on Khalsa Sajna Diwas,” he said while adding that I have been serving in this Gurdwara Sahib since October last year.

Reacting to the expulsion, Sikh activist Harpreet Singh Makhu has said that what could more unfortunate than it that the management committee is expelling a Granthi Singh citing insufficiency of resources while the housemaids are enjoying paid leave amid ongoing lockdown due to coronavirus.

Harpreet Singh Makhu has also raised questions over the working of the Gurdwara’s management committee by saying that if the committee was aware that it doesn’t have enough resources, then why did it distributed free ration to around 500 people during the past days.
