CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The 31st martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh and Shaheed Bhai Kehar Singh was today observed with full religious fervor and devotion at Gurdwara Jhanda Bunga situated near Sri Akal Takht Sahib. Notably, both of them were hanged on January 6, 1989 for assassinating the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Following the culmination of Sri Akhand Path Sahib, Hazoori Raagi Jatha of Bhai Vikramjit Singh recited Gurbani in melodious tones. Bhai Prem Singh performed Ardaas and Singh Sahib Giani Balwinder Singh read the sacred Hukamnama.
Bhai Waryam Singh, brother of Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh, and Bhai Baltej Singh (nephew of Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh) were honored with Siropao by the Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh, SGPC’s chief secretary Dr. Roop Singh and SGPC member Bhai Manjit Singh.
Sarbat Khalsa appointed acting Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Dhian Singh Mand, SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann, Dal Khalsa spokesperson Kanwarpal Singh, Bhai Mohkam Singh, Bhai Jarnail Singh Sakhira, Bhai Manjit Singh Bhoma, Bhai Navdeep Singh Amritsar, Bhai Gursharan Singh Sohal etc. were also present on this occasion.
It may be recalled here that the former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was shot dead by Shaheed Bhai Beant Singh and Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh on October 31, 1984 in avenge of armed invasion into central Sikh shrine Sri Harmandir Sahib.
Shaheed Bhai Beant Singh had attained martyrdom on spot while Shaheed Bhai Satwant Singh & Shaheed Bhai Kehar Singh (who was accused of masterminding this assassination) were hanged to death on January 6, 1989.
