SGPC Calls Meeting for Reconstructing Demolished Darshani Deodi

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Watching no way out to get rid of indictment under criminal charges for demolishing the historic Darshani Deodi of Gurdwara Sri Tarn Taran Sahib, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee has finally announced to reconstruct the demolished part of the historic Darshani Deodi. It is learnt that the SGPC has called upon a meeting of its 11 member Heritage Committee today, so that the Darshani Deodi could be given a traditional look as soon as possible.

It is pertinent to note here that SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann had given an ultimatum to the Tarn Taran Deputy Commissioner on May 28 to book the demolishers by June 7 or get ready to face the music.

Sikh leader Karam Singh Bhoian, who has been sitting on strike beneath the demolished Darshani Deodi since April 1, told Sikh24 that the SGPC officials are trying to suppress the issue by salving the wound that they had given themselves.

“We won’t let the demolishers touch this historic Darshani Deodi until unless they don’t get booked for their sin,” Bhoian said while adding that the decision about reconstructing the historic Darshani Deodi should be left on Sikh sangat.

Recounting such another blunder, Bhoian said that these Kaar Sewa sects had also demolished the Thanda Burj, but the new one constructed by them doesn’t look like the original from any angle.

Satnam Singh, a local of Tarn Taran

Satnam Singh, a local of Tarn Taran, said that demolishing and reconstructing the historic buildings of Sikh shrines has become a joke for the SGPC. “First, you destroy historic buildings and when the Sikh sangat lodges protest, then you start reconstructing it. Is it a joke?” he questioned while saying that the SGPC was meant to safeguard the historic buildings of Sikh shrines, but it has itself become a threat to the Sikh heritage.
