SIT Seeks Court’s Permission to Interrogate Rapist Gurmeet Ram Rahim

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Special Investigation Team appointed to crack the Kotkapura and Behbal Klan firing cases has sought permission from the Court to interrogate Sirsa cult chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim. Notably, Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been serving life imprisonment in the Rohtak jail since August-2017.

Interacting with media on March 19, a SIT member disclosed that Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been named by several witnesses so interrogating him is the need of the hour. “We don’t have any direct evidence about his involvement but his interrogation can help in unraveling the plot behind the police firing incidents and identify the conspirators,” he added.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the SIT also opposed the anticipatory bail plea moved by the former Akali MLA Mantar Singh Brar. The SIT told the Faridkot Court that Mantar Singh Brar had shown evasive attitude during his interrogation so there is reasonable apprehension that he could tamper with evidence or influence the witnesses. The Faridkot Court will pursue hearing on the case today.
