Four Sikh youths namely Bhai Ravinder Singh, Bhai Harminder Singh, Bhai Baldhir Singh and Bhai Jhilman Singh had attained martyrdom on February 4, 1986 while staging protest against sacrilege of five saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Punjab police had opened fire on them when they were staging a peaceful protest in Nakodar.

The SAD government spearheaded by Surjit Singh Barnala had appointed the Justice Gurnam Singh led Investigation Commission in 1986. The Commission had submitted its report in 1987 which was tabled in the Punjab assembly on March 5, 2001 by the Parkash Badal led Punjab government.
