Gurbani Word Of The Day: munivar

ਮੁਨਿਵਰ (munivar)

Meaning: noun: Munis or the best of munis.

Quote:

maan munee munivar gale   maan sabhai kau khaa-i.
Even the munis and the best of munis were destroyed by pride, the pride eats up all. –Bhagat Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib, 1372

Message: Humility is and must be the cornerstone of humanity.  We strive to achieve our best with whatever we have and are able to do. We must be true to ourselves and work hard. However, we must not forget to remain humble and not allow pride to get into our heads. Otherwise, even the best of the best may be obliterated by conceit.

Etymology: Blend of Sanskrit muni (literally, silent, an ascetic, hermit, or sage) + var (a suffix, meaningsupreme, excellent, fine, best), hence best of munis or simply muni.
