In this world, (accepting and practising) the Word of the Guru is the most excellent action. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1342

Message: The Word (Shabad) refers to the teaching of the Guru (Gurbani), which is the Guru for Sikhs. The injunction to seekers here is: Focus on understanding and following the revealed Word or the teaching of the Guru.

It is through the wisdom of the Guru that we obtain an understanding of Truth and are able to savour and reflect on the attributes of the Divine.

When we have such a focus, we are not distracted by materialism and are able to filter out the noise of the world. We overcome our ignorance, egotism and selfishness. The essence of the Divine (Naam) thus comes to abide in our mind and heart. We obtain a state of spiritual elevation and peace.

The true purpose of education is to make minds, not careers. -William Deresiewicz, an American author, b.1964

Etymology: From Sanskrit shabd (articulate sound, noise) → Pali/Prakrit sadd (sound, voice, call) → Sindhi saḍu/saḍo (call, shout), Lahndi sadd/saḍḍ, and Punjabi sadd/saddaa (call, invitation).
