satgur kaa bhaaṇaa chit rakhahu   saňjam sachaa neh.
Enshrine the will (the instruction) of the Guru in your heart and let true love be your way of self-restraint. -Guru Amar Das, Guru Granth Sahib, 554

Message: Various ways of discipline and restraint against sense gratifications are suggested by adherents of different faiths. Gurbani, however, suggests this simple method: be Guru-oriented – be reminded of the teachings of Gurbani all the time and nurture true love for them, wherever you are and whatever you do.

The loving devotion towards divine teachings will bring awareness that sensory gratifications are only momentary pleasures. Excessive attachment to them is the source of our pain and suffering. When our mind is freed from this excessive desire for sensory gratification, we will experience peace and tranquillity.

Without a goal, discipline is nothing but self-punishment. –Anonymous

Etymology: From Sanskrit saṁyam (self-restraint, control).
