Parashuram cries after returning home (when he is deprived of his axe and strength by Sri Rama). -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 953

Message: According to Hindu mythology, Parashuram was the son of Jamadagni, a sage and one of the seven legendary rishis.  Jamadagni had a celestial cow called Surabhi or Kamdhenu which could produce all one desired. Once a Kshatriya king came to the hut of Jamadagni and in his absence carried his cow away. When Parashurama came to know of it, he followed the king and killed him in a fight. The sons of the deceased king, in rage, killed Jamadagni. When Parashuram came home and saw his dead father, he cried and swore to exterminate the whole race of Kshatriyas. It is said that he fought and cleared the earth of Kshatriyas twenty-one times.

According to another legend, Parashuram was eventually, deprived of his axe and strength by Sri Rama, the seventh incarnation of Vishnu. Parashuram came home crying when he was divested of all his power.

We often resort to revenge and vengeance when we perceive that we have been wronged. However, revenge and vengeance bring suffering and misery not only upon others but us also.

Etymology: Literally a blend of parashu (axe) and raam (Lord Rama), hence ‘Rama with an axe’.
