23rd Martyrdom Anniversary of Shaheed Bhai Dilawar Singh Observed at Sri Akal Takht Sahib

CHANDIGARH—The 23rd martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Bhai Dilawar Singh was today observed at Sri Akal Takht Sahib. The religious event was attended by prominent pro-freedom Sikh leaders of Akhand Kirtani Jatha, AISSF, SAD (Amritsar) and Dal Khalsa besides the common Sikh devotees.

Following the culmination of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, a Hazoori Raagi Jatha of Sri Harmandir Sahib sung the Gurbani verses in melodious tones.

Bhai Chamkaur Singh, brother of Shaheed Bhai Dilawar Singh, and his family members were honored with ‘Siropao’ by the SGPC functionaries.

A message of Akal Takht Jathedar Bhai Jagtar Singh was read by Bhai Gurcharan Singh Patiala on this occasion in which Jathedar Hawara has called for unity among Sikhs to achieve the goals for which martyrs sacrificed themselves. Jathedar Hawara has appealed the Sikhs not to get indulged in internecine conflicts as it harms the Sikh struggle.

Shaheed Bhai Dilawar Singh had put an end to the human right abuses against Sikhs in Punjab by punishing the former Punjab CM Beant “Singh” on August 31, 1995. During the tenure of Beant “Singh”, the Police was given full authority by the Punjab government to massacre innocent Sikh youths. Extra-judicial killings in fake encounters and enforced disappearances had become common during the tenure of CM Beant “Singh”.
