koee vaahe  ko luṇai   ko paae khalihaan.
naanak ev na jaapaee   koee khaai nidaan.
Someone ploughs the field, someone else (sows and) harvests the crop, still another places the crop on the threshing floor (to beat the grain from the chaff). Ultimately, yet another eats the grain. Nanak! In this way, it is not known (what may happen in the future). -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 854

Message: Myriad roles, random results
The process of obtaining grain involves the labour of many individuals and people.  There are many functions and division of duties involved to obtain the end product.

Society functions in the same vein. Some people have to work hard to make ends meet, whilst others are able to amass wealth and build beautiful houses. But who is the one who will really have a blissful life? This is one of life’s uncertainties.

By having a positive mind that focuses on hard work and honesty in our actions, and continuing to do our best, we know that we have followed the right path. It does not matter who will benefit from our actions. Neither should we take excessive pride in our actions or their results.

Etymology: From Sanskrit khalavaaṭ (enclosure for a threshing floor) → Lahndi and Punjabi khalvaaṛaa (threshing floor).
