After NIA Chargesheet Against Jagtar Singh Johal, Activists Seek Probe by the United Nations

LONDON, UK—After charge sheet was filed against Scottish Sikh Jagtar Singh Johal and 14 others in the killing of RSS leader Ravinder Gosian, Sikh organizations and activists have demanded an independent probe by the United Nations. Sikh organizations held a gathering outside the United Nations shortly after charge sheet was filed by the NIA.

At the gathering, Gurpreet Singh, elder brother of Jagtar Singh Johal said –

“We have received much support from the Sikh community worldwide. We appreciate the help by the Sikh Federation UK. It’s interesting to note that after 180 days, a charge sheet has been filed by the NIA. However, it was in November 2017 that the Punjab Government’s Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had said that there is credible evidence against Jaggi. What took it so long for the NIA to file a charge sheet?”

“It is also important to note that there are torture allegations in this case. We will not stop our campaign for Jagtar Singh’s release until he is back home. We seek continuous moral support and prayers from the Sikh Sangat,” he added.

“Lastly, remember that there have been no investigations into the fact that the Punjab police used torture against Jaggi, as well as had him sign blank papers.”

Gurpreet Singh said that they will take up the matter with the UK Government. A meeting was also held with UN officials to apprise them of torture against Scottish resident Jagtar Singh Johal.

A court hearing will be held on May 22 in which both sides will present legal arguments.
