SGPC General House Elects Gobind Singh Longowal as new President

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—The second General House meeting of SGPC members today elected Gobind Singh Longowal as its President.  Raghujit Singh was elected as Senior Vice President, Harpal Singh as Junior Vice President and Gurbachan Singh Karmuwala as General Secretary. Unlike the previous years, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) this time tried to give impression of abiding full-fledged democratic values in electing the SGPC officials.

During the start of the General House meeting, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) nominated Gobind Singh Longowal as a candidate for President but the Panthik Front led by Sukhdev Singh Bhaur nominated  Amrik Singh Shahpur. Subsequently voting took place — of the 169 total votes cast, 154 went to Longowal.

Interestingly, the claims of former SGPC General Secretary Sukhdev Singh Bhaur seemed backstabbed as only 15 votes went to Panthik Front’s candidate Amrik Singh Shahpur.

It is pertinent to note here that of the total 170 elected members of SGPC General House, 157 are affiliated with the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal). During the voting for president, one member opted out while 154 voted for Longowal and only 15 for Shahpur.

SGPC members taken into the new executive committee are as follow:

  1. Gobind Singh Longowal (President)
