Gurbani Word Of The Day: thir

ਥਿਰੁ (thir)
Meaning: noun: Fixed, firm, permanent; steady and stable.

Quote:
ਏ ਮਨ ਮੇਰਿਆ   ਤੂ ਥਿਰੁ ਰਹੁ   ਚੋਟ ਨ ਖਾਵਹੀ ਰਾਮ॥
e man meriaa   too thir rahu   choṭ na khaavahee raam.

O my mind! Remain steady and stable, thus you will not endure the blow-lashings of vices. -Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 1112

Message: Is our mind steady? Most of us have minds that are never steady and stable. So how can we unshackle these minds trapped in the disruptive emotions of lust, greed, anger, vengeance and vanity? How can we steady a mind that wavers and wanders around endlessly?

The wisdom and absorption of the Guru’s teachings will help us rein in our mind and liberate us from excessive craving for material possessions.

With the help of Gurbani, we need to make our minds realise and appreciate the blessings and bounties we enjoy in daily life. We need to engage in meaningful reflection of what Gurbani offers us. We need to regularly converse with the mind in light of the guidance from Gurbani.

Steady spiritual relationship with the Fearless will provide us confidence and positivity. It will help us banish our fears and attain spiritual poise. The mind will be illuminated and be content whilst it learns to enjoy what it has.

Etymology: From Sanskrit sthir (firm, durable) → Pali/Prakrit thir → Punjabi thir (firm, fixed, permanent).
