HOSHIARPUR, Punjab—Political Sikh prisoner Bhai Makhan Singh Gill was reportedly arrested from his native village Noorpur Jattan on June 12 by the Punjab police when he was working in his fields. The Police have implicated him in a case pertaining to recovery of 3 Kg opium.
Speaking to Sikh24, Bhai Daljit Singh (nephew of Bhai Makhan Singh Gill) informed that from sometime the Police were pressurizing Bhai Makhan Singh Gill to provide information about the ongoing activities of certain Sikh activists. He added that Bhai Makhan Singh Gill had clearly denied doing so following which the Police framed him in a fake case pertaining to recovery of 3 Kg opium.
On being contacted by Sikh24, Advocate Jaspal Singh Majhpur also confirmed the fact that Bhai Makhan Singh Gill was being pressurized by the Punjab Police to become a Police informer. He said that Bhai Makhan Singh Gill was being implicated in a fake case as he had denied acting as a Police informer. He further informed that earlier the Punjab police had also indicted him in five fake cases in which Bhai Makhan Singh Gill was acquitted by the Court.
Bhai Makhan Singh Gill was released earlier this year in January after a period of 7 years in police custody.
He was initially arrested in 2010 and charged under the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities Act.
Bhai Makhan Singh was handed a harsh sentence of ten years in prison and ordered to pay heavy fines, alongside his co-accused – Bhai Pal Singh (France) and Bhai Gurmukh Singh.
