Gurbani Word Of The Day: koree

ਕੋਰੀ (koree)
Meaning: noun: Weaver.

Quote:
ਕੋਰੀ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾਂ॥ ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਆਨਿ ਤਨਾਇਓ ਤਾਨਾਂ॥
koree ko kaahoo maram na jaanaaṅ. sabh jag aan tanaa-io taanaaṅ.

No one has known the secret of the Weaver who has laid out the fabric (creation) of the whole world. -Bhagat Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib, 484

Message: Mysterious Weaver

Belonging to the weaver class, as per the Hindu caste system, Bhagat Kabir was proud of who he was despite ridicule by the higher classes.

He responds to this criticism of the lower social classes through the analogy of a weaver.

He says that the Creator also is a grand weaver who has weaved this entire web of life and the universe. The world is like a weaving workshop.

The space between the earth and the sky is the loom (a device for weaving thread or yarn into cloth) and the moon and the sun are the two bobbins. The phenomena of birth and death are the two foot pedals in the loom.

Kabir has realized the mystery of this all-pervading Weaver. He is the creator of all and He manifests through all. Finally, all merge back into Him. How then can anyone be high or low?

We should not be shy of any honest profession whether it is weaving clothes, making shoes, or performing menial jobs as we serve humanity.

Etymology: From Sanskrit koraa (unbleached cloth), hence koree, one who weaves and makes new cloth (weaver). The Kori also is a caste of traditional weavers of North India.

The words koraa and koree are also used to mean unbleached, uncolored or crude in Gurbani.
