Panjab University students indicted under sedition charges

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—66 Punjab University students were arrested on sedition charges following protests on campus against a fee hike.  While the charges have now been dropped, there is an uproar over the brutalities of students who were thrashed during the protest.

Students were shouting slogans against the Punjab University for raising fees, however, the administration reported the incident to the police stating that students were raising anti-India slogans.  Ashwani Kaul, University’s chief security said that Police misinterpreted university’s complaints and leveled sedition charges on the students.  He clarified that the charges have been dropped.

Terming the indictment of striking Punjab University students under sedition charges as a grave misuse of law, several human rights and political organizations strongly condemned the move.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) slammed the Chandigarh police for resorting to use of water cannons to make the students quit strike against steep fee hikes by PU authorities.

Speaking to Sikh24, YADA leader S. Amrik Singh Ballowal said that the misuse of law by the saffron BJP led Chandigarh administration was on peak. He added that it was very unfortunate that the authorities of Punjab University were trying to suppress the voice of students instead of having table talk with them to sort out the clash.

Ballowal has said that due to commercialization of education it has become very difficult for students hailing from middle class families to pursue their higher education. ‘Doors of professional education had already been shut for financially weak students due to steep fee hikes in state sponsored universities of Punjab and now the Punjab University has also closed doors for the financially weak but brilliant students’ he added.

He said that the YADA was plaintiff of free higher education to every student they are the building blocks of a robust society. ‘We will look forward to commence agitation to ensure free higher education for everyone’ he added.

  1. Don’t ask what the governments can do for the people but what you can do for the people.
All these rebel students can join up and set up another University.
Do some thing positive rather than creating chaos and violence in an island of peace, knowledge and future builder.

  2. To suppress a problem & give statements without any head & tail is not a solution to problem. Some people’s thinking is so mean that they poke their nose in every genuine problem of common people. If we can’t do anything for the people atleast we should raise our voice for the people so that government can find a solution.

  3. If any one does not like Punjab University or its fee structure he is free to set up his own University and charge fees as per his choice.

  4. For the students who cant afford higher education there are several options

    1) Loans from Bank
    2) Reservation of 10 % in all school ,colleges and Universities .
    3) Setting up several Universities ,colleges and school so as to drive down the cost of Education
    4) Education Tax by Govt to fulfill the mission of a 100 % education.
    5) Enhancing the stature of Teacher in Society by awards ,salaries and ownership in Educational institutes.

  5. Rulers don’t have abilities to rule, they are copying rulers before independence, they don’t have brain, they are still thinking it’s rule of British empire & they are just administrators. Wake up rulers!

  6. Rulers are boosting communal forces & their supporters are busy in negative statements, they don’t have time to find productive ways for education for everyone. If someone is weak economically government should give them grants or concessions, they should raise fees for rich families.

  7. Surinder please set up your own university and charge fees as per your choice.
This University is not a charitable institute.

  8. Just sit back and let the system abuse you, especially the young generation [especially bright students] who are our future – this is your answer. What about your rights and for that human rights. India wants Sikhs out of India that your view as well – pathetic. There was not violence to protest for your rights is not a crime – crime is when the Police use brutality….. wake up !!! you are living in a cloud cuckoo land….

  9. It is a precursor to start of chaos and a civil war in Punjab and Chandigarh .
These things soon get hijacked by anti National elements .
The civil war in Syria was started by an boy and today we have a dozen Nations in the deadliest war of 21 Century.
