NEW DELHI—The passing of motion to recognize 1984 Sikh massacres as a genocide by the Ontario Assembly in Canada this past week was denounced by India media outfits, as well as Government officials. However, very surprisingly, the Rashtriya Swamsewak Sangh (RSS) and two prominent MPs have now asked the Indian Government to favour the motion.
On April 10, the Member of Parliament from Sri Anandpur Sahib Prem Singh Chandumajra and Rajya Sabha member Naresh Kumar Gujral raised the issue of motion passed by assembly of Ontario (Canada) recognizing the massacre of Sikhs in November 1984 as a Genocide. Favouring the motion of Ontario assembly, the duo Parliamentarians termed the Indian government’s stance as a misguided and strange move.
Parliamentarian Prem Singh Chandumajra said that the victims of 1984 Sikh genocide were awaiting justice from more than three decades but the Indian governments since then have only scrubbed salt on their wounds by appointing different investigation commissions and teams which had no outcome. Chandumajra appealed the BJP led Union government of India to come forward in favour of motion moved by Ontario assembly and recognize the massacre of Sikhs by Hindu mobs in 1984 as genocide.
The Ontario assembly had recognized the massacre of Sikhs in Delhi (India) as genocide of Sikhs by passing a motion on April 6. The motion was brought in the Ontario assembly the Member of Provincial Parliament Harinder Kaur Malhi. The motion was favoured by the 35 out of the 41 present MPPs in the Ontario assembly.
However the Ministry of External Affairs of India had condemned the move by terming it as a limited understanding of Canadian MPPs about India. “We reject this misguided motion which is based on a limited understanding of India, its constitution, society, ethos, rule of law and the judicial process,” said external affairs ministry spokesperson Gopal Baglay.
To everyone’s surprise however, the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat, the Sikh wing of the pro-Hindutva body Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS), has also given a statement in favour of motion passed by Ontario assembly recognizing the massacre of Sikhs in November 1984 as genocide of Sikhs.
In a press statement earlier today, the RSS said that it strongly condemns the violence against a particular section based on their religion or ethnicity. The RSS further said that the massacre of Sikhs in November 1984 across India was a one sided massacre of Sikhs and it can’t be termed as ‘riot’. However, the RSS has said that the heinous carnage was carried out by a political party not by Indian government.
