There are those who do not offer even a handful of water to anyone, but they slander the one who brought forth the Ganges. – Bhagat Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib, 332

Message: In this verse, Bhagat Kabir is describing the evil nature of people who are so devoid of any conscience or morality that they may not even give a handful of water to a thirsty person, but they would slander those who might have ‘diverted large rivers like Ganges for the benefit of others’ (helped people in a big way).

Despite not doing any good deed for others, they easily find fault with those who might perform great acts of kindness and compassion. Instead, they devalue other people’s efforts.

The purpose of human life is to serve and show compassion to creation in totality. We must strive to cultivate good habits and perform good deeds in our lives and help others without any thought of personal gain. With the right guidance and the right company, we can discipline our mind. Let us avoid criticizing charitable and noble efforts of others and instead help others in serving humanity.

Note: Positive criticism is not a bad thing. We need to be constructive rather than bad mouth others.

True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us.  – Socrates, Greek philosopher

Etymology: From Sanskrit chulu (handful of water; hand hollowed to hold water) → Prakrit chulua (handful) → Sindhi churoo (hallowed palm of hand).
