Kejriwal Promises “Holy City” Status for Sri Amritsar and Anandpur Sahib

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—On second day of his four days visit to Punjab, the National convener of AAP and Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal paid obeisance at the sanctum sanctorum Sri Harmandir Sahib on September 9. Kejriwal was accompanied by relatively low count of Party volunteers as compared to his earlier visit to Sri Harmandir Sahib.

Addressing the media on this eve, Arvind Kejriwal said that if AAP succeeds in upcoming assembly polls of 2017 then Sri Amritsar Sahib and Sri Anandpur Sahib will be assigned status of ‘Holy City’.  “Liquor, tobacco, cigarette and meat will be completely banned in these cities,” he promised.

However, Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and President of Shiromani Akali Dal, Sukhbir Badal sharply reacted to Kejriwal’s statement by clarifying that Sri Amritsar Sahib and Sri Amritsar Sahib have been already assigned status of Holy city by the Punjab government.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar has also confirmed that Sri Amritsar was already having status of ‘Holy City’ and the liquor is also banned within boundaries of walled city.  Notably, the sale of tobacco, cigarette and meat is rampant in Sri Amritsar Sahib.
