NEW DELHI—Addressing the Parliamentarians on August 3, Union Home State Minister Hansraj Gangaram Ahir informed that the Special Investigation Team appointed to probe 1984 Sikh genocide cases has identified 49 cases for re-investigation. Speaking before the Rajya Sabha, Gangaram informed that the SIT identified these cases on July 29 based on special criteria.
It is notable here that total 650 cases were registered in relation to Sikh genocide of 1984 occurred after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Earlier in June, several cases were recommended for re-investigations, however, no progress has been made in these cases so far. In most cases, Government makes advertisements asking witnesses to file affidavits, however, the process ends there as their appeals either don’t reach the right people, or the eye-witnesses are too afraid to submit their testimony.
In February 2015, a SIT was appointed on the recommendation of the committee spearheaded by the former Judge of the Supreme Court of India, Justice GP Mathur. The SIT was made to file reports on the cases within six months, but later its validity was extended for one year without any reason.
Earlier, speculations were being made that SIT could open 186 out of 241 cases (considered for re-investigation). But the recent revelation by Union Home State Minister Hansraj Gangaram Ahir has once again proved that the Sikhs will remain deprived of justice in India. Numerous Investigation commissions appointed by various Indian governments have yielded nothing to avail justice to the victims in the last 32 years.
