(ik o-aňkaar – The Supreme Reality) was in existence before the beginning of creation and existed before the beginning of time, the ages. It exists at present, and Nanak! It will exist in future too. – Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 01

Message: Jap Ji starts with the logo ||JAP||, which Sikhs receive as an instruction to both recite and meditate upon.

It is followed by the above salok, which states the subject of our meditation – which is none other than the Eternal Truth as declared in the commencing verse, with which the Guru Granth Sahib opens.

The salok reiterates the very fundamental nature of the Ultimate Reality, the Constant. It reveals to us the reason It is called or named as sat (sat-naam) – true for ever, everlasting, eternal. It is the only entity that is permanent, perpetual. It existed before creation. It existed before the beginning of time or the ages. It exists in the present, and it will exist for eternity. It is sat or sach for all times – this is what is being advised to jap – to contemplate upon and connect.

Embrace this Everlasting Reality and keep It enshrined in the heart for all times.

Etymology: From Sanskrit satya (true, truth, promise) → Prakrit/Pali sachch → Sindhi sachu and Punjabi sach.
