AMRITSAR SAHIB—Political prisoner, Professor Devender Pal Singh Bhullar, was discharged by the local Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (TADA) court of Amritsar today, in relation to a case registered against him by Batala police in 1992. The Court based its verdict on the debate held on April 1, between prosecution and defence lawyers.

Professor Bhullar was indicted in this case in February 1995 on the testimony of an undisclosed person. The case pertains to an alleged police encounter in which two Sikhs (Bhai Gurmej Singh Geja and Bhai Joga Singh) were martyred. Professor Bhullar was charged under sections 307, 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), sections 25, 24, 59 of Arms Act, sections 3, 4, 5 of Terrorists and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act (TADA) and sections 4, 5 of the Explosive Act.

The legal counsel of Professor Bhullar, Advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, said that the court refused to accept the charge sheet filed by Batala police against Bhullar. The discharging of Bhullar in this case may pave the way to his release.

Bhavandeep Singh Sidhu of the United Akali Dal and Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa Sangharsh Committee welcomed the verdict by the court.  “We expect Prof. Bhullar to be released from jail within a few days now,” he said.  “This will allow Prof. Bhullar to apply for parole, however we hope that the 1993 case against him by Maninderjeet Bittu does not cause hurdles,” he added.

Bhai Jang Singh of Sangarsh Committee also welcomed the decision and congratulated the entire Panth.  Sikh24 could not get a comment from Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa due to him not feeling well.

The transfer of Bhullar to Punjab was approved by the Punjab government last year, which was under pressure from Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa’s struggle. He was transferred to Amritsar jail in May of 2015. Bhullar, who suffers from schizophrenia, was admitted to the psychiatry ward of Guru Nanak Hospital, where he is still under the care of doctors.

  1. Laws in India need to be redrafted by group of wise Law makers .
We must not blindly mimic the world .
We have our own rich history and culture to draw inspiration from to draft

    “Real Indian Laws”

    • Absurd jingoistic nonsense. ‘Real Indian Laws’ and rich history and culture have led to TADA and the murder of Sikhs by police officers in Uttar Pradesh killing them for advancement and bounty as SIkhs could be labelled en masses as being terrorist and so fair game. Virtually every humanitarian law and civil liberty jurisprudence has legalistically come from the west – there’s a good reason why the International Criminal Court is in the Hague and not Delhi.

  2. This is welcoming news for us – however he has already suffered a life sentence not to mention his state of health that his in – Is the government going to even acknowledge their wrongdoing? Why was he not discharged at the beginning of his sentence the law would still have been the same. The Government of India is a disgrace and shameful not that they care….
