Jammu & Kashmir—The District Magistrate of Jammu sent out a letter to internet service providers to shut down their mobile and landline networks, in what they call an attempt to keep the peace and in the name of law and order. It is worthy to mention that an innocent Sikh was shot and killed by Jammu police yesterday. The letter (provided below) was sent out to the companies Airtel, Aircel, BSNL, Vodaphone and Idea. The companies were asked to shut down their internet services until another notice is sent out to them. If they do not comply with the order they can be charged under section 144 of CrPc, which can lead to imprisonment under section 188 of the Ranbir Penal Code. The letter is signed by Simrandeep Singh, the district magistrate for Jammu district.
Is this standard practice for the world’s largest democracy? In the name of fear (for my job), let’s bury over 1.5 million peoples head in the sand.
