CHANDIGARH, Punjab—A petition has been launched to seek a fair trial and bail for journalist Surinder Singh of Talking Punjab.  The petition states that while all others named in the FIR along with Surinder Singh have been released, he has yet to receive a fair trial.

Before his arrest, Surinder Singh was providing coverage to social and human rights issues. He is a well-established journalist and media personality. Even though the statute of ‘Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act’ (TADA) has expired, it has been used against Surinder Singh. Surinder Singh was earlier detained in Punjab in February 2015, however in October 2015 the arrest took place in Ambala (Haryana).

Surinder Singh was arrested in October 2015 in a case dating back to 1987.  As per his lawyer, there is no credible evidence against Surinder Singh.  Surinder Singh surrendered himself in the case, allegedly, due to growing pressure by the Punjab police and government.

The petition impels the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Government of Haryana to expedite Surinder Singh’s court hearings and allow him to be released on bail until further investigations are going on.
