Law and Order of Punjab Will Be Distrubed If Water Is Shared with Haryana: Capt Amrinder

Punjab WaterCHANDIGARH, Punjab—Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Capt. Amarinder Singh expressed strong apprehensions that there may be serious law and order situation if the river water of Punjab is shared with Haryana.

The former Punjab chief minister made these remarks in reaction to Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi’s statement at a gathering in Hussainiwala (Firozpur) on the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh on March 23. Modi had advocated sharing river water in the presence of Badal.

He said the trouble may surface in the state as people of Punjab will not tolerate any such move to deprive the state from its limited water resources. He slammed the Punjab CM Parkash Badal for his silence on the issue even after the statement of Union Minister Uma Bharti that they may make some headway for giving river water to Haryana within 45 days.

Capt_Amarinder_Singh“How can Uma Bharti make such claim when the presidential reference is still pending in the Supreme Court”, he argued.

He recalled as to how without caring about the political consequences and risking their government, the Punjab Termination of Water Agreement Act 2004 to save Punjab’s waters was enacted.

The Congress leader further said that he will not be surprised if and when Badal agrees to the terms and conditions of the Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal as he had already shown his weakness by going along with the BJP in supporting the anti-farmer amendments in the Land Acquisition Act in the parliament, although publicly Badal had adopted a contrary posture.

It is worth mentioning that Modi had said, “The linking of rivers is a must for the country so that water reaches all. Punjab has got a network of canals, but the fields at the tail end of this network do not get enough water. Linking rivers is a must to provide water to all.”
