Bikram Singh Dhanaula Launches Hunger Strike Seeking Justice for Sikh Genocide

Bikram Singh DhanaulaNEW DELHI, India—Manav Sewa Sangathan Chief, Bikram Singh Dhanaula, who hurled a shoe at Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Badal in a state level function, launched a hunger strike on Wednesday for an indefinite period seeking justice in the 1984 Sikh genocide case.  He is campaigning at Jantar-Mantar near Indian parliament here.

Just a few days ago, Bikram Singh Dhanaula took Amrit from Panj Pyaras (Five Beloved of Guru) at Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Led by Dhanuala, members of Manav Sewa Sangathan also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s Office seeking punishment for those accused of the mass killings of members of the minority Sikh community.

Dhanaula arrived here by riding a bicycle from Sri Darbar Sahib, Sri Amritsar Sahib. He launched the hunger strike following the submission of the memorandum.

Talking to media persons, Dhanaula said that during the Lok Sabha elections, BJP had promised to deliver justice to the Sikh nation for the 1984 Sikh genocide, but after six months in power, the BJP government has shown no sincerity in this regard.

Explaining the events of the Sikh genocide, Dhanaula said widows of victims of the pogroms were eye witnesses and they were waiting for justice with wet eyes. He said that the then rulers used the government machinery at a massive scale by murdering Sikhs around the country, the reality of which should be exposed in public.

“So far 18 commissions have been constituted to ensure justice for the victims and countless demonstrations have been held by Sikhs during past 30 years, but no ray of justice is being seen yet,” he said. He appealed to the Indian prime minister to deliver justice at the earliest, otherwise it should be announced that the doors of Indian Courts are closed for Sikhs.

Dhanaula was accompanied by Harmeet Kaur Brar (Patiala), Amandeep Singh (Ludhiana), Nisha Sharma (Barnala), Jatinder Singh (Sangrur) and Sant Rajkawal (Madh Pardesh).
