AMRITSAR SAHIB—Sri Akal Takht Sahib appointed Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh today stated that it was Bhai Gurbakhash Singh Khalsa’s own inspiration to fast unto death for the permanent release of Sikh political prisoners languishing in jails of India despite the completion of their terms.

In a press statement issued here, Giani Gurbachan Singh said he fully agreed with the cause of Bhai Gurbakhash Singh and asked him to end his fast previously following the assurance made by the government in this regard. He also said he had ensured the parole of some Sikh political prisoners.

“I was told by him at that time that he would go for legal fight to get the Sikh detainees released permanently. Realizing our duty, we have been taking up the issue of Sikh political prisoners with each and every office bearer and minister in government. All have made assurances to make efforts to ensure the release of the prisoners”, he said.

He said that though the Punjab government was making efforts to resolve the issue, it must speed up the efforts because delay in this regard would be harmful. He contended that Sikhs made great contributions to form the government, so the government should be sincere to resolve Sikh issues.

Describing the proposals regarding section 25 (2) (b) submitted by Harbans Singh Aujla and Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), the Jathedar said Sikhs have to face many issues due to provision of section 25 (2) (b) in Indian constitution.

He advised Sikhs to become united on a single platform to ensure the deletion of the section which denies the separate identity of the Sikh nation and take up the issue with the central government.
