Op/Ed: Rebellious Balkar Sidhu Poses Strong Risk to Bibi Baljinder Kaur in Talwandi Sabo Elections

TALWANDI SABO, PUNJAB—Balkar Sidhu, a prominent Punjabi singer, who was expelled from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) yesterday is in a rebellious mode. The former Punjabi singer was seen campaigning heavily in the native village of Bibi Baljinder Kaur, where he seemed to have received much anticipation, in addition to other villages in Talwandi Sabo.

Former AAP volunteer was expelled yesterday, along with Sandeep Handa, a longtime activist of the Aam Aadmi Party.  The decision to expel Sidhu and Handa came when a three-member disciplinary committee of the AAP found them for conspiring anti-party activities.  It should be noted that Handa was appointed as the district committee convener by MP Prof. Sadhu Singh.

After the Aam Aadmi Party cancelled nomination of Balkar Sidhu, he filed papers as an independent candidate.  Although initially it seemed that Sidhu would not enjoy much support as an independent candidate, the case is turning out to be otherwise.  He has toured a number of villages, attracting large audiences everywhere.

If Balkar Sidhu is not convinced by other AAP members to step down, he might actually help Shiromani Akali Dal (B) or the Congress candidate by diverting votes that would otherwise go to Bibi Baljinder Kaur.  Balkar Sidhu’s earlier nomination was encouraged heavily by Bhagwant Mann, however a large numbers of complaints were allegedly received by the Aam Aadmi Party which led to his cancellation.
