New Delhi, India—Punjab Chief Minister, Prakash Badal, on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and demanded a special committee be constituted to probe into the 1984 Sikh genocide. He urged that the conspiracy behind the massacre be included in the terms of reference of the inquiry.

Badal said, “The people want to know who was behind it. India should clear this…”  Badal further requested that “dedicated courts” should be set up to expedite cases in which FIRs had already been registered and submitted.

Meeting between Badal and Modi lasted for more about 40 minutes. A memorandum was also submitted by Badal on demands pertaining to the State of Punjab, and the Sikh community.

Badal said the inquiry commission should be told to complete its investigation within six months. He urged that cases be re-opened and reviewed. He also sought a rehabilitation package for the victims.

Surprising, Badal’s demand have been criticized by the renowned Supreme Court lawyer and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader HS Phoolka.  HS Phoolka told Sikh24 that, “The Home Minister is empowered to constitute an SIT to re-investigate 237 genocide cases which were closed by the police and not sent for trial. However, the Home Minister is not empowered to order that the SIT must be monitored by the Supreme Court. It is surprising why Badal is trying to complicate the issue.”

“It appears that the Chief Minister has not been properly briefed or he is trying to befool the Sikh masses”, he added.
