KAPURTHALA, Batala—Navtej Singh Gaggu who was allegedly accused along with Harchand Singh Mari Kamboke in a case of assassinating the notorious police cat Ajit Poohla, was released today from modern jail Kapurthala. The police named 6 persons in this case. Three have already been discharged by the trial court Amritsar.
Navtej Singh and Harchand Singh allegedly burnt the fake Nihang to death in Amritsar jail in 2009. The complaint in this case was registered by former Jail Superintendent Balkar Singh. Both the suspects are from Tarn Taran district.
During the militancy era and aftermath, Ajit Poohla, self styled chief of Nihang Singh Jathebandi ‘Tarna Dal’, committed enourmous atrocities against the people. He brutally murdered many innocent civilians, and mercilessly raped the women. He was considered to be the biggest black cat of all Police. He had been prepared by Police to tackle the armed Sikh movement. Poohla enjoyed the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) granted to him by the government.
By burning Ajit Poohla, Navtej Singh and Harchand Singh, many people consider that he gave proper punishment to a cruel person who enjoyed impunity because of state patronage.
Upon arriving at his home city Batala, Navtej Singh was greeted by residents who welcomed him warmly and distributed sweets. Large numbers of Sikh leaders were also present on the occasion.
