AMRITSAR SAHIB—Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has joined hands with the Mumbai-based private firm Revolutionary Concept Chamber that specializes in innovative ways to impart education through modern means based on information technology (IT). The motive of the engagement is to bringing the younger generation closer to their roots and inculcating a sense of pride for the Punjabi language.

Formal announcement in this regard was made here on Friday following a meeting between the firm’s director, Dr Manpreet Singh, and SGPC secretary Manjit Singh. The meeting was also attended by other senior SGPC officials.

Manjit Singh said a musical website was already being run by the company for teaching the 35 letters of the Gurmukhi script to children.

Introducing the website, Manpreet Singh said, “It is akin to the nursery rhymes taught in schools with the help of music. Its basic purpose is to create interest among nursery children in their mother tongue.”

The SGPC official said the company website would also have information about Sikh religion and history.

“The basic concept is to make our children aware of basic information, most of which should have been taught to them at home,” Manjit Singh said, while pointing out that the majority of the young generation was not even aware of the basic knowledge about Sikhism e.g. names of ten Gurus.

He mainly referred to Sikh Diaspora and concerned about its young generation who don’t have proper knowledge of Sikhism, added, “Even back home, the situation is not entirely satisfactory, with our mother tongue remaining limited to the Punjabi class in school.”

Manjit Singh expressed hope that the tie-up would help in “taking Punjabi out of the classrooms and making it a habit among our children at home and in public.” SGPC additional secretary Balwinder Singh Jaurasanghia will coordinate with the company.
