FATEHGARH SAHIB, Punjab—Blaming the entire political leadership as responsible for the degradation that has plagued our society, the Dal Khalsa said a handful of people have forgotten the teachings and philosophy of the great Gurus, and were indulging in inhuman and heinous activities that puts the entire society to shame.

Party spokespersons Kanwar Pal Singh and Ranbir Singh in a statement said news published in one of the English dailies (Hindustan Times) about young daughters and infants falling prey to their drunken alcoholic fathers was really horrifying and disgusting.

Terming such men as inhuman and barbaric who are not fit to roam freely in society, they said that apart from drugs and liquor, there are multi-dimensional factors responsible for degradation in society. They said over the years such an environment has been created where persons had developed inhuman, sick mentality.

“We are shocked and ashamed that we are part of such society where womenfolk are living terrified lives, and young daughters are facing disgraceful, and inhuman, treatment from those who are supposed to be their protectors, while the Home Minister of the state  SS Badal is dreaming to make Punjab a California. Is Punjab a progressive state as claimed by one and all,” they wondered.

They urged the Punjab government to take suo moto notice of the reported crime and arrest all of those whose cruelty stood exposed, notwithstanding women refusing to lodge police complaint against their husbands. They also urged the government to order probe into all private as well as state government hospitals to collect data of crimes of such nature.

They rued that the drug menace has reached an alarming rate and is ruining the young generation. Ironically, no political party has any concrete agenda, or policy, to end this menace. Politicians are interested only in votes, and they don’t care about the upgrading and uplifting of living standards of voters, or restoring moral values in the society. The successive governments react only when there is a hue and cry, and then only in writing papers, or through lip service.

They said the government had lot to do in this regard. To create awareness, the government must set up a special cell to focus on human resources development. They said Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), panchayat bodies, and socio-religious institutions should be roped in to awaken the masses.
