GURDASPUR, Punjab—Having received no justice in the case of Bhai Jaspal Singh Chaur Sidhwan who was gunned down mercilessly by Punjab police in 2012 for showing solidarity with Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, his mother Bibi Sarabjit Kaur today expressed deep fury and hit Gurdaspur Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) (Badal) Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Gurbachan Singh Babbehali with her chappal (slipper).
The attack was carried out after 24 hours of giving a clean chit to the senior police officer charged by investigators of the case. These officers are considered as main accused parties in the case. The MLA was hit with a chappal when he visited Jaspal Singh’s village Chaur Sidhwan. Babbehali had to face the wrath of the enraged mother of Jaspal Singh, for his role in the case of killing of her son. The family, as well as the villagers, have been critical of Babbehali’s role ever since the martyrdom of Jaspal Singh. Babbehali had not visited the village since the incident.
Bibi Sarabjit Kaur became enraged upon seeing the MLA, who had come to the village to seek votes for SAD Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) candidate, Vinod Khanna, a Bollywood star turned politician. As Babbehali left his vehicle to enter the house of village Sarpanch Gurmeet Kaur, where he was to attend a meeting, Jaspal Singh’s mother Sarabjit Kaur, who was in a house nearby became furious and rushed to fling a chappal at the MLA. The first chappal she flung on the MLA hit his vehicle. Seething with anger, Sarabjit Kaur flung the second one which hit Babbehali squarely in the face. Babbehali was then rushed into Sarpanch’s house as Sarabjit Kaur continued to express her anger verbally. The MLA remained there for about half an hour, and then left the village.
