NEW DELHI— Aam Aadmi Party president and former Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday wrote a letter to Delhi Lt Governor Nazeeb Jung in which he requested the chief administrator to set in motion the process of forming the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the 1984 Sikh genocide.

In the letter, Kejriwal said, “Some of the witnesses are already old and setting up of the SIT would be their last hope of getting justice in this country. Many of the eyewitnesses have already been waiting for 30 years to provide their version of how they lost their near and dear ones in pre-meditated carnage. Therefore, you are requested to kindly speed up the setting up of this team.”

It is notable that The AAP government this past February 6th had recommended to the Lt Governor to set up the SIT to probe the Sikh genocide and proposed a time frame of one year to submit its report. The proposal was approved in a cabinet meeting which was subsequently approved by the Lt Governor.

Kejriwal thanked Jung for accommodating his government’s decision and asked him to appoint police officers from outside Delhi in order to ensure a thorough and impartial probe of the “most brutal” incident in Delhi’s history.

He has also suggested the names of three senior IPS officers from outside Delhi who could be appointed to head the investigation.

It is pertinent to mention that while approving the details of a SIT probe, the Delhi government had stated that all those cases which were closed or shown untraced would be re-opened, re-investigated, and, if need arises, would also file fresh FIRs. Charge sheets would also be filed in those cases where the investigation process has been completed.
